Kelley School of Business teaches IPMX 2011-2012 batch

The Kelley School of Business (Indiana University, USA) taught the IPMX Class-of-2012 at South East European University (SEEU) at Tetovo/ Skopje, Macedonia. This was a truly International immersion for all of us as a US B-School not only taught us at a relatively developing region of Europe but also sensitized us with a different Europe, which turned out to be really very courteous and warm host for all of us.

Some excerpts ..

Udyam 2011- Day 2- Keynote Address by Hon. Justice C Joseph

Day 2 @ Udyam 2011 began with the keynote address by Hon. Justice C Joseph, Supreme Court of India.
Excerpts from Hon. Justice Joseph’s address is shared below
“Distinguished panellists, members of the faculty, my dear students and other participants, a very sensitive and controversial subject you have chosen. Being a sitting judge of the supreme court I have my limitations to express my views on matters that would come for consideration in court. Bearing in mind of my limitations I would share my views today.
This is a leadership summit; I believe that those who are invited to share their views here are perceived to be leaders in the society. I have also noticed that those who are invited are not in politics. It is heartening to know that there are people who realize that leaders are not confined to the politics but also outside that realm. Leadership can’t be restricted to politics. Unfortunately in our country, leadership takes the hues of being part of politics
I am happy that you have taken a wider perception of leadership. In our society there are too many leaders, but there are very few good leaders.
It is possible to go to internet and view the readings of the great men who have defined leadership, but I always felt that what my teacher in primary school told me still holds good and I have not come across a better learning during these 65 years.

My teacher told me that a good leader is one who knows the way, shows the way and goes the way.

We have many leaders who do not know anything, still there are many people who know nothing but show the way and go the way. It is this conflict between precept and practice that baffles the society”

Hon. Justice Joseph went on to share a story from his hometown about an Anti-Liquor Rally that was organized by Gandhi Peace organization, which got disrupted because one person who is notorious for his alcoholism came in front of the anti-liquor rally and demolished the very credibility of the rally by his act. He drew parallels from this story with the society of today, as the people who jump on the bandwagon of corruption today also do not have the same level of credibility to lead such a rally against corruption.

Any number of laws, judges, policemen and punishment would not eradicate corruption, if that would have been possible it would have been eradicated. People are so ingenious that they find a way to get out of law as soon as a new law is created. What is required is a change of heart as far as every individual is concerned which can only be achieved if there is a commitment to justice.

Justice Joseph eloquently described justice as follows
“Justice implies that everyone gets what he needs and none takes more than what he deserves. You deserve something as the outcome of what you have put in, no one should take more than what he deserves .In a just society it is not enough to live and let live, but we must try to live and help live others”

He further mentioned that justice demands concerns and compassion for others. If one helps to identify the just society in this way, it would help each one of us tackle the problem of corruption. Most often one indulges in corruption by choice, he has the other option of choosing opportunity and freedom to desist from being corrupt but for his own reasons he makes a choice to be corrupt.

From his experiences he had come to realize that even though corruption is all pervasive in India, we shall not ignore the positive aspects of our society and Justice Joseph urged the audience to think about the positives of our society as well, which often get overlooked and forgotten, and the negative side is exaggerated.
Justice Joseph said that there are many honest politicians, bureaucrats, social workers and businessmen who have been aiding in the development of India over the last 6 decades and we should not ignore or forget them in our anxiety to condemn what is wrong in the society.

Our focus should be to become prophets of hope rather than prophets of doom.

Finally Hon. Justice Joseph closed this extremely motivating and thought provoking keynote address by congratulating IIM Lucknow for organizing this discussion and hoped that it motivates us to play a more active role in eradicating corruption.

Udyam 2011-Day1-Keynote Address by Mr. M.Damodaran

Udyam is a quest from IIM L to participate towards nation building and contribute in means and manner required by country at different stages of growth. So each year IIM Lucknow tries to bring to fore the issues that either paralyse our country or issues that are pertinent to the sustainable growth of our country.

The topics covered for this year's summit were

Innovation Led growth model for India
Corruption: By Choice or compulsion ?
Green Business: Enabling a sustainable future
Role of HR in imbibing CSR Culture in Organization

Day 1 of the annual leadership summit “Udyam 2011” started in the traditional way of lighting the lamp by Dean Archana Shukla and the chief guest for the day Mr M.Damodaran, former SEBI Chief.

Thereafter Mr M.Damodaran officially inaugurated the event by delivering the keynote address and illuminating the audience with his pearls of wisdom.

Mr. Damodaran started his address by mentioning that young women and men of India, should be at the centre stage of India’s growth and development effort. He said that he takes this opportunity to try and provoke the audience on where India is and where it can be if we all do the right things and where India would be if we don’t do those things.
He went on to talk briefly about each of the three areas which were part of the planned panel discussion in this leadership conclave.

On corruption he mentioned that we look at corruption as a standalone phenomenon that needs to be addressed, and focus more on symptoms rather than the disease. He mentioned that corruption is something that held his generation back as the older generation did not have access to information. He exhorted the virtues of the younger generation of constantly asking questions and appreciated this urge of the younger generation to understand what is unknown. Rather than being a nation of “Yes mans” we now need to develop a critical and analytical temper which helps in nation building.

Mr. Damodaran urged the audience to realize that the society is maligned by "acceptable corruption" and even enlightened, intelligent and articulate people don't question this.We should not be tricked by persuading oneself that there are only few problems which exist and we as a nation need to realize that there are a number of bumps along the way.

Mr.Damodaran further shared his views on Corporate Social Responsibility and how it has become a new trend in the Industry. However CSR should be expressed in terms of what it means, our outlook on CSR has not been clearly drawn out.
Events such as Udyam are held to ignite the minds of future leaders of India to think on how to shape the future of this country. He encouraged each member of the audience to believe in himself and tell oneself that no matter what your experience has been there is a leader each one of us.

He ended the keynote address stating that

"It is important that we allow the leader in each one of us to come out, fed on the right values and incentives and that is what conclaves of this kind foster".

Kakkar Ko Takkar - Ad Competition @ IPMX

MrDas

The perception that there is no humane face to management education was
proved wrong by IPMX students of IIM Lucknow Noida campus on Tuesday. With
limited resources and a shoe-string budget, the executive MBA students of
the institute shot creative advertisements on social issues ranging from
child labour to malnourishment.

The competition, aptly termed 'Kakkar ko Takkar' (students throwing a
challenge to celebrated adman Prahlad Kakkar), started with dean prof
Archana Shukla and professor Rajeev Kumra welcoming the chief guest, Barun
Das, the CEO of Zee television. Once the three-member panel of judges - Das
and the two professors - settled down, the much-awaited contest rolled off
to a thunderous applause from the students.

KakkarKoTakkar
IPMX student Dr Pratibha Dabas walked away with the honours with her
innovative ad on child malnourishment. Through powerful images set in the
backdrop of moving music, she highlighted the shocking tale of children in
dark and neglected corners of the world dying of malnutrition. The team of
Rajbeer Kaur, Chandrakala and Saurabh Bhatia bagged the second prize for
their innovative and sensitive handling of child adoption issue. The third
prize went to Prafulla Kumar, Sheetal Karnataki and Sweta Singh for their
advertisement on female foeticide.
Impressed with the advertisements, Das offered to run the best entries on
some of his channels. "It's a fantastic effort, especially because you
didn't have the kind of resources that an ad agency has. Some of the ads
brought about flashes of brilliance," he said while addressing the class.

The team of Subhradeep Bhattacharya, Surender Mallik and Anurag Singh put
the show together on behalf of the marketing club of IIML.

The adverts can be be viewed at the following link:

These updates would be posted on the blog over the next few days.

Senior Connect: A night to remember

Senior Connect IPMX

It was a stroll down the memory lane for the IPMX alumni who descended on the campus on 24th July to relive their student days. Planned as an informal gathering, the senior connect event sought to link the experience of seniors with the exuberance of the present batch.

Ideally one would have picked up a Saturday evening for the event as the looming Monday morning blues takes the fun out of Sunday evenings but as luck would have it, due to a plethora of lectures and workshops on Saturday we were confined to arranging the event on a Sunday. Whoever said there is a weekend in a week for people to relax did not consider MBA Students in his sample.

Thus the event was planned for Sunday, 24th evening. It took us about 2 weeks to prepare for the event and as the date of the event came close there was an expected buzz around the campus. Almost the entire batch was curious to see the people who had survived this 1 year and passed from the hallowed gate of IIM Lucknow.

We had planned for a music system and a DJ and few games to entertain our guests for the evening. Thus by 6 PM we were ready with the logistics, now started the biggest challenge “the wait”…

IPMX Students

True to the Indian tradition, the stream of visitors picked pace well beyond the world standard time. Our first guest arrived at 6:35 PM. Soon more followed and by 7:20 we had more than 20 seniors with us.

At once the atmosphere was heavy with excitement; we kicked off the program with a small introduction of batch and a power point presentation of previous batches. As part of the icebreaker session we started with some small games and gave out small prizes in form of chocolates

Slowly people warmed up and Ajay from the very first batch of IPMX started sharing his experiences about his journey in IPMX.

Other seniors followed and soon the room was full of anecdotes and past experiences as the alumni relieved their journey in IPMX on choosing elective courses, methods of study.

Someone had just started suggesting the merit of studying hard and learning but then a hoot came from background: “Aren’t you the one who bunked highest number of classes?”  One thing I chose to remember that “have as much fun you can while you are at IIML”.

Then soon it was time for food and mingling, all the guys were chatting up storms in groups and every one was busy. We shut down the PA system and projectors for good and got busy with new found friends.

Dance at Senior Connect

Very soon, seriousness of discussions gave way to some fun. In no time, people were gyrating to music on the dance floor.
It was an evening to remember. We met and saw the people who had been through this program before us and we could see our own reflections few years from now.

Trip to Jim Corbett National Park

For most of us oversleeping and missing breakfast had become a norm during the last few weeks of Term I.  To shake off the End Term examination blues, few of us decided to head to Jim Corbett National Park.

As the Park is about 230 Km from our campus, hence we decided to take an early start. We woke up in the wee hours to pack our stuff and kick off for our weekend adventure trip.

Snapshots from Hell

After two months of grueling classes, last-minute submission of assignments and projects, surprise quizzes and spine chilling end term exams, we have stepped into our second term. Battered and bruised, the swagger of term one seems subdued but the spirits are still soaring high. Wiser from experience of spending sleepless nights for exam preparation, many (yours truly can be excluded from this elite list) have resolved not to let anything pile up till the D-day.  Planning, after all, is an essential part of being a manager-to-be.  Execution though can wait till the opportune moment.

From Kelley To Delhi

Crouching in the velvet cream colored sofa of the college reception hall, I was dreaming of the bed lying idle in my hostel room, which after a long day of mine in the class, was enticing me cruelly to embrace it and forget about the High-Tea arranged in the evening to confluence us with students from Kelley School of Business, USA.Just when my body posture was gradually taking in the safety of the sofa, the students from Kelley gushed into the hall with such energy and vibrancy that I, as if in a reflex action, sprang to my feet at once and rushed towards them with my right hand extended.

Living it up!

"Trrrrnnnnnn....", "Trrrrnnnnn....!"I slapped the phone alarm. Somewhere I felt that I still had some time left to get ready for the office. OFFICE?!!! My eyes gaped and mind went blank. Suddenly it dawned on me, I was in the college! Bed just threw me out in a jiffy and here I was, on my way to the class.

I had always dreamt to be part of this elite school of business and today I was. Galloping with happiness, I reached my first class. It was that first class and then it is today (past 3 weeks), its really been a journey worth sharing.

Starting from the disparate mix of people in the class to seamlessly fitting faculty members, it has been an enriching experience of learning. Thanks to the management accounting subject, suddenly the articles in the economic times are making some sense now! Not only are the articles but also those inquisitive questions which were never questioned earlier are getting raised.

The Great Leap...

Classroom beckoned after an excruciating wait of 91 months. What looked like a never-ending hiatus with studies was finally bridged last week when I found myself slouched uncomfortably among a heap of intimidating, high-sounding fat books, and a bunch of enthusiastic people drawn from all corners of the country.

Leaving behind the security of a decent paying job, cosy confines of home and care of family, I landed at IIM Lucknow Noida campus welcomed by a surprise shower. And yes I didn’t miss the evening pakoda-chai, which as I feared has become a regular feature at our mess.
